In a Facebook post Tuesday, Florent Manaudou announced he would be taking a short break from swimming training as he resets after the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Based on a translated version of the post, Manaudou said that he will maintain his membership with his longtime club, CN Marseille, but he will not be actively training as he had in the lead-up to the past two Olympics. Manaudou, who won gold in the 50 free in London and then a pair of silvers in Rio, suggested that he will still compete occasionally, notably at a meet in Tahiti Oct. 7-10 and then at the French Club Championships in early November.

Manaudou makes clear in the post that he intends to return to full-time training at some point, and he cites the examples of three French swimmers, his sister Laure, the late Camille Muffat and Yannick Agnel as well as American gold medalists Anthony Ervin and Michael Phelps as swimmers who have gone on to have extensive success after a break.

During his absence from full-time training, Manaudou says he will play some handball, and he has been training of late with the Aix Handball club. Manaudou played handball during his youth, but says that he “gave up too early” on playing the sport to focus his attention on swimming.
