Masters Swimmer Dies During Race

RICHMOND, Virginia, February 16. A 71-year-old Virginia Masters swimmer suffered an apparent heart attack yesterday while swimming in a meet in Chesterfield County and died, according to a story in this morning's Richmond Times-Dispatch.

David Gregg, a member of the Fairfax County Masters swim team, had completed about 150 yards of a 200-yard race shortly before noon yesterday when he sank under water, according to a meet official.

Another swimmer in the race brought Gregg to the surface. He was pulled from the pool and given CPR, the official said. Gregg was taken to nearby CJW Medical Center (Johnston-Willis) where he was pronounced dead.

Between 150 and 200 swimmers were taking part in the Virginia Masters Winter Invitational at Riverside Wellness and Fitness Center-Briarwood. The swimmers decided to cancel the remainder of the meet.
