Greg Shaw Sets Three Short Course Masters World Records -- October 28, 2002

By Ed Gendreau

BOSTON, Oct. 28. FIFTY-ONE year-old Greg Shaw set three short course Masters world records at
Northeastern University, Saturday October 26. Shaw, a member of New England Masters Swim Club, accomplished these swims during a half day NEM meet.

First up was the 100 fly, where Shaw lowered John McCall's 1:01.95 world mark (2001) for men 50-54 by 1.34 seconds to 1:00.61. Four events later was the 50 fly, which Shaw already owned at 27.45 seconds. Clearly this was in jeopardy after the fast 100 fly, and Shaw came through, lowering his mark by 6-hundredths to 27.39.

Two events later, and on very short rest, Shaw came up a little short of Bob Stand's 100 IM standard - 1:04.97 - with a 1:06.36. But, four events later proved enough rest for Shaw to recharge and take down Mexico's Jorge Urreta's 2:24.32 world mark (2001) for the 200m IM by almost 6-tenths of a second to 2:23.73.

The Northeastern meet marks the start of the SCM
season in New England, and we're looking for more fast swimming - culminating in the NEM 25-Meter Championship at Wheaton College in Norton MA, December 14-15.
