Michael Klim Will Train in Sydney

By Justin Cohen

SYDNEY, Oct. 7. OLYMPIC and World Champion swimmer Michael Klim today announced that he will be relocating from Australia's Gold Coast to Sydney.

As one of Australia’s most popular athletes, Michael has remained at the forefront of international swimming, setting numerous world and national records. Most recently, he won both the 100m and 200m freestyle events at the 2002 Australian Short Course Championships in Melbourne in his first outing after back surgery.

"I am looking for a training program that is more oriented toward sprinting and feel the training program most suited to my needs is to be found in Sydney, at the University of Sydney. Brian Sutton, who I will be training under has the necessary experience to offer me a variety of training methods particularly suited to sprint events" said Klim.

Michael admits the decision to relocate from the Gold Coast to Sydney was a difficult one. However, he acknowledges that the decision was necessary in order for him to take the next step in his swimming career.

"It is very important for me to work with a coach who has the experience in working with elite athletes who are at a transitional phase in their career. Having made a complete recovery from my back injury, my main goal is to find a location and program that provides me with the best opportunity to realize my full potential as I approach the 2004 Olympics" said Klim.

Michael’s next competitive event will be the Telstra World Cup to be held in Melbourne from December 6-8, 2002.
